Power of Mind

“The potential of the human mind is subject to, and limited only by, our individual beliefs or un-beliefs as to whether we can accomplish a thing or not”.

Well said! A vast majority of human beings have the awareness that a strongly motivated determination rivals everything. While, unfortunately, only a minority of people raise this awareness to a real level and actually apply it to their daily lives and careers, both spiritually and physically. Maybe this can well explain why the most successful deeds go to several comparatively small groups, regarded by the rest of the masses as social elites of each particular domain.

Once before, running a mile under 4 minutes was considered impossible, ever since the mile was actually timed. In fact, doctors proved that 4 minutes for the mile was the limit of human capacity. Sociologists running tests, showing, proving scientifically the limits of human ability was running the mile in four minutes and people could not go beyond that limitation, even the greatest athlete. And runners proved that doctors and scientists were right: they ran the mile in 4 minutes 14 seconds, 10 seconds, with Sweden's Gunder Haess’ best-of-then in four minutes and 1.4 seconds. But, no one could break the 4 minutes mark. So, people began to believe that running the mile under 4 minutes couldn’t be done.

Then, it came along with Roger Bannister, a British runner, a good runner but not top level runner whose best record was 4 minutes 12 seconds, said when he was then a medical doctor at the Oxford University: “No, it is possible to run the mile in less than 4 minutes and I am going to do it”. When he said this, of course no one took him seriously, as everybody already had the deep rooted belief that that was impossible. Doctors and scientists and runners from worldwide had proved that. Not surprisingly, his efforts failed him again and again. But, Roger did not believe the so called limitation. He continued to train himself day in day out, not harder than the best runners in the world, but as hard as the top-level runners, and year in year out, he did managed to improve better. He ran into 4 minutes 10 seconds, 8 seconds, and then 2 seconds, pretty much closer. But, then, the progress stopped, like everyone else, he was not able to go below that barrier. Instead of giving up, he claimed consistently that there was no human limitation on that. He continued to train in following years but to no avail.

Until May 6th, 1954, during his home tour to Oxford’s University, he crossed the finishing line in three minutes and 59.4 seconds, which leaving more than 3000 spectators on site erupting into joys. Immediately, the event sensationalized world media headlines: “Scientists are defied”, “Doctors defied”, “Impossible made possible”. For decades, it was believed that human beings could not surpass the 4 minutes barrier ever since the mile was timed. But, on May 6th, 1954, Roger Bannister did it. Six weeks later, John Landy, an Australian runner, ran the mile in 3 minutes, 57.9 seconds. The following year, 1955, 37 runners ran the mile in under 4 minutes. In 1956, the number prompted to over 300.

Once the psychological barrier is broken, the time running the mile keeps falling. Why? Are there any new technologies employed? Is it due to the new shoes? No. The answer is that it is the mind that transforms the impossibility into fact; It is the power of mind that brings the dream into reality.

Conclusion: Human potential is infinite, anything that seems impossible might be overturned if you utilize your mind to the best.
